Guest Keynote Sponsored by HP: Midsize Enterprise IT: A Fundamental Shift in Focus |
For most of the history of IT, midsize enterprise investment has been driven primarily by the development and deployment of the great database systems of record: financials, HR, order processing, inventory, customer relationship, supply chain, product life cycle, and the like. Data centers, servers, clients, networks, databases, analytics, tools and technologies—all drew their ultimate ROI from the quality and productivity gains achieved by automating the various functions of the corporation via one or more of these systems of record.
Today, as we stand on the verge of the next decade, that work is largely done (indeed, has been done for some time), and while maintaining it will consume much of the IT budgets for years to come, it no longer will drive new investment, and it will no longer engage the business side of the house in the IT dialog. All of which begs the following questions: What will? and What impact will that have on IT organizations and the vendors who serve them? The short answer to this question is next-generation communication and collaboration applications to address the looming, worldwide white-collar productivity crisis.

Breakout Session #1: Email in the Cloud: Pro's and Con's |
Email is among the first critical applications to move to the cloud or software-as-a-service provisioning model, and serves as a harbinger of customer experiences with the cloud platform. Microsoft, IBM, Google and Cisco are all vying for this market. But availability does not necessarily mean that moving email to the cloud is a good idea.
Based on real-world experiences, this presentation examines the pros and cons of a cloud-based approach, and illuminates broader concepts of cloud computing.
